The Verdict’s In: Utility Jackets

There’s a phrase for something that slowly insinuates its way into a woman’s mind and wardrobe: a sleeper hit. The latest? The superfunctional utility jacket with its military detailing and multitude of pockets. They’re slowly starting to appear, but by spring there will be a whole army of them. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this jacket, of course. Remember Kate Moss in hers? She wore it to Glastonbury 2008 and then didn’t seem to take if off, for, ooh, at least two years. More recently, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons scored a major victory with this fall’s deconstructed army outerwear, some transformed into draped coats, others, like this (left), spliced together with plaid blankets. A quick recce of the spring shows in Europe confirmed that whatever little was being bought for fall, an awful lot of it was obviously being found at Comme: Kawakubo’s coats were out in full force. “It is boyish and sporty, and for me, cuts the girlishness of being dressed up and in heels,” says Amy Astley, the editor in chief of Teen Vogue, of her CDG olive cotton drill coat.

While Astley has worn it as much with Clarks desert boots as she has with her Alaïa booties, she can do so because her coat is so inventive in its design. If you choose to wear one that’s truly like an authentic field number, better to stick to wearing it with bolder pieces, though that can mean anything. For Sophie Pera, features assistant at Vogue, it’s shimmering sequined pants. For fashion writer Florence Kane, it’s a romantic chiffon dress and a heavy, heeled ankle boot. As for fashion contributing editor Elissa Santisi, she advises taking inspiration from next spring’s collections—specifically, Balmain. She sees the jacket with a tattered tee, a suede skirt that has been ragged and ripped at the hem (maybe get a vintage one and do it yourself), and a touch of gold chain mail, be it from an antique bag or pair of old earrings. Some of the jackets here can be pressed into service right now, like the cold weather flight jackets. Others, such as those in washed cotton, will work layered up now—and still emerge from your closet victorious come spring.

IRO: Kate Moss’ Favorite New T-Shirt Line
By Lauren Sherman

Flip through the market pages of any glossy these days–Lucky, Elle, etc.–and you’re likely to find an image of a soft, loungy IRO t-shirt. The collection, which we featured in “Five Frenchie Labels Set to Blow up Stateside,” is designed by Paris-based duo Laurent and Arik Bitton, whose mission in life is to sex up soft tees.

But with fantastic brands like LNA, Kain and T by Alexander Wang dominating the high-end tees market in the US, what differentiates the Bitton brothers’ collection from the rest? Well, it does help that Ms. Moss is a fan. Fashionista recently quizzed the boys.

Fashionista: Describe your clientele.
IRO: Active women who like to have a look without giving the impression of “too much.” Fresh, modern, casual.

Why is it so important to you to broaden your reach in the US?
While we were living in NYC pursuing our music career, the fashion on the streets really inspired us. We really believe that our French touch, mixed with NYC street style, is a perfect cocktail for the US market.

Paris has yet again become the epicenter of all things hip. Why do you think that is?
Fashion society changes very fast. We don’t think that this is due to French fashion, but more about new French brands becoming more accessible and designing with a strong-yet-feminine direction all with a justified price point for today’s times. The word “accessible” is emphasized: accessible in terms of the styling, the image, and again, most importantly, the pricing.

What stores do you favor in New York and Paris?
Our favorite store in NYC is Curve; it has a very strong concept and you can feel that the person in charge really knows about fashion. In Paris (besides the IRO stores!), we like Merci; it’s new and fresh.

What are your favorite pieces from Spring 2010? The KILAV (an artfully-holed tee).
We just received an email with a request from Kate Moss saying she wants to buy it!

What are you feeling for fall?
One word: “USED.”

Trend alert: Kate Moss wears a flat cap
The trend-setting supermodel steps out in a fashion-forward flat cap

Wednesday, 3 March 2010

If you thought that Guy Ritchie was the only celebrity who wore flat caps, you'd be wrong!

The flat cap has been given the fashion world's seal of approval with Kate Moss stepping out in a chain-detail one.

And we all know that if Kate wears anything it becomes a major trend, so we reckon the military-style flat cap is here to stay for the next few seasons at least.

This hat may be bang on trend, but it won't keep your ears warm, so it's just as well that spring is in the air!
